Background of the study
Morphological simplification refers to the process by which complex word-formation processes are reduced to more basic forms, often to facilitate communication in formal contexts. In Nigerian English, particularly in academic and professional writing, there is an observable trend towards simplification of morphological structures. This study appraises the extent and nature of such simplification, examining the reduction of inflectional and derivational elements that traditionally characterize the language (Uche, 2023). Nigerian English, influenced by indigenous languages and colonial legacies, often features elaborate morphological patterns; however, formal writing tends to favor streamlined, efficient communication. This research employs a corpus analysis of formal texts, such as academic journals, business reports, and government publications, to quantify morphological complexity. The study also investigates the factors driving simplification, including language planning, stylistic preferences, and audience expectations (Nwosu, 2024). By identifying patterns of morphological reduction, the research aims to contribute to our understanding of how formal registers shape language use and influence the evolution of Nigerian English (Akinyemi, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Although morphological simplification in Nigerian English formal writing is widely observed, systematic research on its extent and underlying causes is limited. Preliminary analyses suggest that formal texts exhibit fewer morphological variations compared to informal registers, yet detailed studies quantifying this phenomenon are scarce (Uche, 2023). The lack of comprehensive data hinders our understanding of how formal writing practices impact the evolution of Nigerian English morphology and complicates efforts to develop style guidelines and educational curricula that reflect current usage (Nwosu, 2024). Addressing this gap is essential for informing language policy and supporting effective communication in professional and academic contexts (Akinyemi, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

To quantify morphological complexity in formal Nigerian English texts.

To analyze patterns of morphological simplification.

To identify factors driving simplification in formal writing.

Research questions:

How does morphological complexity in Nigerian English differ between formal and informal contexts?

What specific simplification patterns are observed in formal texts?

What factors contribute to morphological simplification in formal writing?

Research Hypotheses:

Formal writing in Nigerian English exhibits significant morphological simplification.

Simplification is driven by stylistic and audience expectations.

Language planning initiatives correlate with reduced morphological complexity.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it documents morphological simplification in Nigerian English formal writing, providing insights for educators, policymakers, and language professionals. The findings will aid in developing guidelines that enhance clarity and consistency in formal communication (Uche, 2023; Akinyemi, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to formal writing contexts in Nigerian English and does not cover spoken language or informal registers.

Definitions of terms:

Morphological Simplification: The reduction of complex word-formation processes.

Nigerian English: A localized variety of English used in Nigeria.

Formal Writing: Language used in professional, academic, or official contexts.
